The White Stripes
The White Stripes are my latest obsession. I know, I could say that about just about everyone I've written about here. But I think that Jack and Meg (unlike the StrokesHivesVines) deserve all the hype they're getting. They don't take themselves too seriously, they're fun, and they're great live, as proven by their 5-night musical guest spot on Conan O'Brien last year. And Jack White is comfortable enough in his masculanity to sing Dolly Parton's "Jolene" in the original female perspective in which it was written. (I was in love as soon as I heard him screech, "Jolene, I'm begging of you, please don't take my man!") I saw them live on June 16, 2003 with two very good friends of mine, and needless to say the night was a blast....even though afterwards we did stand outside the venue in the rain for an hour, hoping in vain that Jack and Meg would come out. (Eventually we saw a car with a Detroit license plate drive away. We think it was them making a getaway.) Sigh.
